Semester at Columbia is new program designed to inspire you and help take your talent to the next level before attending college. Here you will explore college-level courses in Filmmaking and The Business of Music on our campus in downtown Chicago, and be challenged to think creatively, develop an authentic voice, and discover how your creativity can shape the world around you.
2020 PROGRAM overview and COURSES
Through a freshmen-level course with hands-on, collaborative experiences and personal attention from our faculty of professionals, you'll produce incredible work to add to your portfolio. Plus, you'll enjoy several perks of being a Columbia College Chicago student: your own Columbia ID, access to our facilities, and the opportunity to earn college credit that you can use toward your degree at Columbia College Chicago.

Great filmmakers start with a clear, independent vision, but bringing it to the big screen is all about collaboration, and the Semester at Columbia Filmmaking course is a collaborative and exciting deep dive into the medium of filmmaking for college-minded high schoolers, led by our award-winning faculty.
THE BUSINESS OF MUSIC
Get ready for a comprehensive exploration of the multibillion-dollar music industry. The Semester at Columbia Business of Music course will explore professional songwriting, copyright, the recording industry, management, touring, publishing, marketing, distribution, the role of technology in the industry, and different careers available within the music industry.
WHY PARTICIPATE IN A HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM AT Columbia?
If you are local, creative high schooler interested in exploring your creativity among like-minded peers in an urban environment, the Semester at Columbia program may be for you.
Every Saturday for eight weeks, you’ll spend six hours on Columbia College Chicago’s state-of-the-art campus in the South Loop, learning from faculty who have deep experience in the creative industries and earning college credit that can be used toward your degree if you attend Columbia as an undergraduate. You’ll also have the opportunity to work and explore creative careers through various faculty-led enrichment activities that will take you across campus and throughout the City of Chicago.
Semester at Columbia students receive freshman-level college credit. The core component of the Semester at Columbia program is a freshman-level college course and corresponding grade at the end of the eight week program. This is college credit that can be used toward your degree, should you matriculate to Columbia in the future.
Semester at Columbia students get to work with our industry-active, award willing faculty on our state of the art campus and throughout Chicago.
Semester at Columbia students have the opportunity to participate in an end-of-program screening and project presentation, which is open to the friends and family.
Semester at Columbia students will have access to nearly all college facilities and student benefits, including access our new, state of the art Student Center, located at 754 South Wabash Avenue.
SEMESTER AT COLUMBIA REGISTRATION AND TUITION
February 1 - March 21, 2020
Tuition for the Semester at Columbia high school program is $750, which includes a single 3 credit hour freshman-level course and 3 or 4 faculty-led enrichment activities that give insight into the creative industries and its leaders.
While Semester at Columbia is an open-enrollment program, students are subject to the same expectations, academic rigor, and learning outcomes as those of the regular Columbia College Chicago school year. Below are general indicators to help students determine if they are prepared for the Semester at Columbia program:
YOUR GPA IS 3.0 OR HIGHER
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS RECOMMENDED BY A SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR AND/OR INSTRUCTOR FROM YOUR CURRENT OR PREVIOUS ACADEMIC YEAR
YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE OR KNOWLEDGE IN THE SEMESTER AT COLUMBIA PROGRAM AREAS (EG. PORTFOLIO, PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE, BLOG)
